Professor John Aaskov OAM – ñ̳ 1967 – 1970
- Professor John Aaskov OAM is a renowned authority on mosquito-borne viruses – with a career as a Microbiologist and Immunologist spanning from 1976 to 2006. His particular area of expertise concerns the origins and treatment of Ross River and Dengue fever.
- In 1995, he obtained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of the United Kingdom.
- In 2015 Professor Aaskov was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in the Australia Day Honours, given for service to medical research in the field of infectious diseases.
- John has also maintained his ties with ñ̳, having served for years on the College Council and more recently as a member of the Board of Fellows.
Mr David Addis – ñ̳ 1984 – 1988
- BCom LLB (UQ). Vice- Master of King’s 1988
- Former member of the Foundation Committee and Council of ñ̳.
- Chief Operating Officer – GARDA Property Group (current)
- Extensive boardroom and governance experience as a Director, adviser or C suite executive.
Dr Michael Banney – ñ̳ 1987 – 1990
- Michael Banney was a Kingsman from 1987 – 1990.
- He served as a member of the Buildings & Grounds Committee 2012 – 2014.
- As the Principal of the m3archecture firm, Michael was contracted as the author of the current ñ̳ Master Plan – and as a result has an obvious interest in the fabric of the College.
Mr Donald Steele Barrett AM
- Mr Don Barrett was educated at St Edmund’s College, Ipswich and then at UQ and Kelvin Grove Teachers’ College. He taught at Nambour State High School, 1951 and Brisbane State High School, 1952 to 1959.
- He was appointed Lecturer in Classics and Ancient History, UQ, from 1960 to 1965 and was awarded a Commonwealth Study Grant to study at the Institute of Classical Studies, University of London, 1966.
- He was a Senior Lecturer, 1966 to 1972, Associate Professor, 1973 to 1994; Dean, Faculty of Arts, 1983 to 1994. Don was a Member of Senate at various times and held the position of Secretary, UQ Academic Staff Association from 1972 to 1994.
- Don taught Classics and Ancient History, served as the UQ Senate representative on ñ̳ Council for 25 years until his retirement from the Council in 2018.
Mr Malcolm Broomhead AO – ñ̳ 1970 – 1973
- Mr Malcolm Broomhead’s qualifications include Bachelor of Engineering and Master of Business Administration degrees from The University of Queensland. Malcolm was President of the KCSC in 1973.
- He was Managing Director and Chief Executive of North Limited from January 1999 until the company was acquired by Rio Tinto Plc in October 2000. North had operations in Australia, Canada, Sweden and Argentina. Malcolm spent 10 years with North from 1990 to 2000.
- Prior to joining North, Malcolm held senior operations, engineering and financial positions with Industrial Equity Ltd, Peko Wallsend Ltd, and MIM Holdings Ltd and worked in the United Kingdom, Middle East and Papua New Guinea as well as in Australia.
- He currently serves on a number of Boards, including BHP Billiton.
Professor Lindsay Brown – ñ̳ 1971 – 1974
- Professor (Biomedical Sciences). Faculty of Sciences Biological and Physical Sciences at The University of Southern Queensland Darling Downs. Prior to this appointment Lindsay was for many years a Lecturer and Associate Professor of Physiology and Pharmacology at The University of Queensland.
- Lindsay served as a member of the ñ̳ Council for many years and also in the role of Treasurer of the King’s Old Collegians Association. He is currently a member of the Board of Fellows.
Mr Craig Chapman – King’s College 1984 – 1989
- Mr Craig Chapman is Principal Partner at Dentons. Craig advises banks, financial institutions and corporate borrowers on a broad range of syndicated and bilateral transactions involving property and construction finance, acquisition finance (both takeover and management buy-out/buy-in), project finance, structured finance and general corporate finance.
- He was a member of the KCSC Executive for a number of years and Senior Resident in 1989. He has previously served on the KOCA Inc., the College Council and the Foundation & Fundraising Committee. He was re-appointed to the College Council in 2012 and only recently retired for the Council in 2020.
Ms Louise Charlton
- Louise has been a valued supporter of ñ̳ for many years. From 2011 to 2016, Louise loyally served the College as a member of the Executive Staff team and as the inaugural Director of Learning and Leadership. In this role, Louise was responsible for the oversight of academic performance of all students and for supporting students in their search for employment.
- Louise has a Bachelor of Regional and Town Planning and a Post Graduate Diploma of Education with The University of Queensland. She was a student at Duchesne College while undertaking her undergraduate studies. Prior to her role at King’s, Louise was a Lecturer/Tutor at The University of Queensland (1998 to 2010).
- Married to a Kingsman, Cameron Charlton, she remains a loyal and dedicated supporter of all that King’s does. She still advises and supports Old Collegians today – who seek her out for her wise counsel.
Mr Neil Chesworth – ñ̳ 1969 – 1972
- Mr Neil Chesworth is a civil engineer with a career of achievement in both Australia and overseas with employers in both the public and private sectors. Along with a Civil Engineering degree from the University of Queensland, Neil graduated in 1978 from the Australian National University with a Bachelor of Economics.
- Neil served on the College Council from 1981 to 2002, the KOCA Inc. from 1980-1997 and was awarded the honour of being made a Fellow of ñ̳ in 1995. Among Kingsmen, few are as passionate in their dedication to the spirit of the Wyvern and all that it means.
Mrs Rowena Craze
- Ms Rowena Craze was awarded a Bachelor of Commerce from Murdoch University in 1989, and an MBA from Curtin University in 1998.
- A Certified Practicing Accountant, Rowena specialises in Risk Management and Internal Audit, and is National Partner in Charge of KPMG’s Internal Audit business.
- A member of College Council from 2013 to 2019, Rowena was College Treasurer and Chair of the Finance Committee from 2014 to 2019. During this time, the College implemented significant strategic change through the development of the Wensley Wing and expansion of the Old Collegians’ Learning Centre, the establishment of the College Café, the introduction of a range of flexible options in College service offerings, and the transition of the College to co-residency in 2020.
Mr Michael Creedon – King’s College 1986 – 1989
- Mr Michael Creedon is a specialist construction and major projects lawyer with Minter Ellison where he is a partner. His experience includes the preparation and review of a wide range of construction, engineering, maintenance and consultancy agreements for major infrastructure projects; handling of construction and engineering claims; disputes through litigation, arbitration and dispute resolution.
- He is a member of the Institute of Arbitrators & Mediators Australia, Engineers Australia and is executive secretary to the Queensland Major Contractor’s Association.
- Michael was President of KOCA Inc. from 2002 to 2007 and was Vice President of the College Council from 2005 to 2012.
Emeritus Professor Mat Darveniza AO – ñ̳ 1949 – 1952
- E/Professor Mat Darveniza AO received his Bachelor of Engineering degree from UQ in 1953; his PhD from London University in 1959; a Doctorate of Engineering from UQ in 1980; and an Honorary DSc Engineering degree from Chalmers University, Sweden, in 1990.
- From 1980 to 1997, he was Professor (Personal Chair) in Electrical Engineering at UQ – also being Head of Department from 1983 to 1987. In 1998 he was appointed Professorial Research Fellow and Emeritus Professor.
- He was elected a Fellow of the IEEE in 1979 (Life Fellow in 1998); Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) in 1982; Foreign Fellow of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences in 1993; recipient of the Meritorious Achievement Award in Continuing Education in 1997; and Officer of the General Division of the Order of Australia in 2003.
- In 1994, at the age of 62 years, he established his own private consultancy company, Lightning & Transients Protection Pty Ltd, of which he was Principal Executive Officer.
The Hon Martin Daubney AM – ñ̳ 1981
- The Hon Martin Daubney was educated at Downlands College and The University of Queensland, graduating with Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws in 1986.
- Admitted in 1988 as barrister of the Supreme Court of Queensland, commencing practice in Brisbane. He is a member of the Bar Association of Queensland, the Legal Practitioners Admissions Board, the Australian Bar Association and the Law Council of Australia.
- Appointed in 2007 as Judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland.
- Appointed as an Honorary Fellow of the Australian Catholic University in 2007.
- He was elected as President of the ñ̳ Council in 2009 and retired from that position after 6 years of distinguished service to the College. Martin Daubney was awarded the King’s Jacket for outstanding service to the College. The jacket was presented at the 2015 Commemoration Dinner.
- Martin was nominated by ñ̳ for the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2018 – he was successful in being awarded the 2018 Queen’s Birthday Honours List as a Member (AM).
- He retired from the bench in December 2021 to assume the role of Chancellor of the Australian Catholic University in January 2022.
The Hon Paul de Jersey AC, Governor of Queensland (2014 -2021) – ñ̳ 1969 -1970
- The Hon Paul de Jersey AC was educated at Church of England Grammar School (now Anglican Church Grammar School), East Brisbane (1961–1965), he attended The University of Queensland between 1966 to 1971 and completed a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws (Hons).
- In 1971, the Governor married Kaye Brown in the ñ̳ Chapel.
- He then was appointed the 26th Governor of Queensland on 29July 2014. Before this appointment, he served as the 17th Chief Justice of Queensland from 1998 to 2014.
Judge Ian Dearden – ñ̳ 1974 – 1977
Judge Ian Dearden was educated at Rockhampton Grammar School and attended The University of Queensland and QUT, graduating with his Bachelor of Laws and Master of Legal Practice.
- Admitted as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1984.
- Appointed to the District Court in 1995.
- Appointed Judge of the District Court in Queensland in 2005.
Dr Alan Demack AO – ñ̳ 1953 – 1958
- Dr Alan Demack AO graduated from The University of Queensland in 1957 with a Bachelor of Laws degree and was admitted to the Queensland Bar. He was then elevated to the Bench as a District Court Judge in 1972.
- Appointed as Senior Judge of the Family Court of Australia in 1976 and Judge of the Supreme Court of Queensland and Central Judge stationed in Rockhampton in 1978 to 2000.
- Community involvement includes: Chairperson of the Queensland Marriage Guidance Council from 1974 to 1978; Lifeline Rockhampton Board of Management from 1980 to 1991; and Patron of the Blue Nursing Service (now Blue Care) Rockhampton from 1978 to 2005.
- Alan was made an Officer of the General Division of the Order of Australia in June 2000. In the same year, he was also awarded the degree of Honorary Doctor of Laws by the Central Queensland University.
Adjunct Professor Roger Dooley AM – ñ̳ 1967 – 1970
- Adj Prof Dooley was a Kingsman from 1967 – 1970 and the 1969 KCSC President. He was Chair of the Council Committee that in 2003 recommended co-residency for the College.
- He is currently the KOCA Patron.
- In his undergraduate years at Kings, Roger made significant contributions to the sporting and administrative activities of the student body including becoming President of the Student Club in 1969. He subsequently spent almost thirty years on the ñ̳ Council where he dispensed sage, sensitive and rational advice through some of the most turbulent years of the Council and College. He developed the first comprehensive proposal for Kings to become co-educational. In his professional life as a Clinical Psychologist, Roger has made significant contributions to the training of Psychologists and to the profession of Psychology.
- Roger was recognised in The Queen’s Birthday 2021 Honours List as a recipient of the award in the General Division of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to community health, psychology and to professional societies.
Emeritus Professor John Egerton – ñ̳ 1951 – 1955
- Dean Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Sydney 1979-1982
- Doctor of Veterinary Science honoris causa, University of Sydney
- Credited with invention of the first vaccine for prevention and treatment of footrot in sheep and goats leading to the eradication of virulent footrot in more than 10,000 flocks in NSW.
- Granted title of Emeritus Professor in 1997.
Emeritus Professor John Elkins OAM – ñ̳ 1958 – 1961
- Professor Elkins taught physics and mathematics for five years (Nambour State High and Brisbane State High.)
- He joined the Education Department in the University of Queensland in 1967, with research interests in students with learning difficulties and the inclusion of students with disabilities in regular classes.
- Having served as Head of Department and Dean, he retired in 2002, and later worked at Griffith University for three years conducting longitudinal research on support services in primary schools.
- He also was on the Board of Directors of the International Reading Association for three years and Co-Editor of The Journal of Reading.
Dr Ross Fardon – King’s College 1956 – 1959
- Dr Fardon is currently a Research Consultant of Fardon and Associates.
- He was formerly an independent Non-Executive Director and Company Chairman of Cloncurry Metals Ltd., in charge of global exploration for BHP Billiton and Mount Isa Mines, Director-General of Mines and Energy South Australia and was Chairman of a Commonwealth Cooperative Research Centre. He has reviewed all geological surveys in Australia.
- Dr Fardon has founded two high-tech companies (Technomin and APR Ltd), and was CEO of both.
- Ross was President of the KCSC in 1959.
Mr Jim Farmer – ñ̳ 1970 – 1972
- Mr Jim Farmer entered King’s in 1970 and having completed his BA with a double major in Economics left the College in 1972. Later he completed a Diploma of Teaching and a Bachelor of Laws degree.
- He was admitted as a Barrister of the Supreme Court in 1987. From 1990 – 2008 he worked at the Public Defender’s Office and retired to take up Doctoral studies at The University of Queensland.
- Jim has long been a stalwart of the KOCA Inc. and was the President from 2008 to 2015. As President of the KOCA he gave freely of his time and energy – and with his wonderful wife Lily, they engaged themselves in the life of the College. Jim has been a wonderful ambassador for the Old Collegians and he is one of the College’s greatest supporters. His passion for King’s is always evident. The College is indeed fortunate.
Professor Paul Greenfield AO
- Professor Paul Greenfield AO was Vice-Chancellor of The University of Queensland from 2008 to 2011 and Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor from 2002. Prior to this, he was Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Physical Sciences and Architecture and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Physical Sciences and Engineering).
- He graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering (chemical first-class honours) and his PhD from the University of New South Wales. He worked at CSIRO before winning a three-year fellowship to the U.S.
- In January 2006 Professor Greenfield was made an Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia for service to science and engineering and to the tertiary education sector.
- He has extensive experience as a Board Director and is currently a Director on a number of company boards, as well as a consultant for projects in biochemical engineering; wastewater treatment; waste and environmental management.
Emeritus Professor Trevor Grigg – ñ̳ 1966 – 1969
- Professor Trevor Grigg was The University of Queensland Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) 1997-99; Dean of Business, Queensland University of Technology 1995 to 1997; and Head, Graduate School of Management (GSM), The University of Queensland 1992 to 1994.
- He was Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International and Development) at UQ from 2000 to 2007.
- His professional research interests focus on public utilities and public infrastructure policy, planning business strategy, public policy and financial, pricing and investment-related issues and management. He has been a director of both private sector companies as well as public sector business unit boards.
Dr David Hainsworth – ñ̳ 1967 – 1973
Dr David Hainsworth won a State Open Scholarship to The University of Queensland and graduated from there with a Bachelor of Engineering (1971) (first-class honours electrical) and PhD (1976) in electrical engineering.
- David was a senior lecturer in the Department of Electrical Engineering at QUT and following that has spent 26 years with CSIRO in Brisbane, retiring from the position of senior principal research engineer in 2017. He won CSIRO medals in 2015 and 2016 for impact from research and service to industry through his work in mining automation.
- As a student David was an active member of the General Committee of the KCSC and after leaving King’s was treasurer of the KOCA and was also a long-time member of ñ̳ Council including several years serving as secretary.
Dr Jennifer Harrison
- Jennifer Harrison was educated at Somerville House and The University of Queensland. Her career as a research historian, lecturer and author has been within and outside academia, both in Australia and overseas, especially in Ireland, and also in the UK, USA and New Zealand.
- Jennifer is married to Ronald (Sam) Harrison, student at the College in 1948, KOCA member, Fellow and former College Councillor and their son, Jonathan Inverarity Harrison resided at ñ̳ from 1989 – 1992.
Mr Sam (R I) Harrison MBE – ñ̳ 1948
- Mr Ronald (Sam) Harrison, MBE entered ñ̳ in 1948, after having attended Anglican Church Grammar School East Brisbane between 1943 and 1946. Following completion of his Bachelor of Commerce degree, Sam was a successful Chartered Accountant until his retirement.
- Sam is married to Dr Jennifer Harrison and their son, Jonathan Inverarity Harrison attended ñ̳ from 1989 – 1992.
- Sam served on the College Council for many years and was also Treasurer. He was appointed a Fellow of the College and is today, Chairman of the Board of Fellows. In 2010, he was elected Patron of the KOCA Inc.
Emeritus Professor Trevor Heath OAM
- E/Professor Trevor Heath OAM is a former Professor and Dean of Veterinary Science, The University of Queensland from 1973 to 1980.
- He received a Medal (OAM) in the General Division for service to the veterinary profession, particularly as an educator, mentor and administrator in 2003.
- Trevor was Academic Consultant to ñ̳ from 1999 until 2019 and is one of the few men to have been awarded the King’s jacket for distinguished service to the College. He is much loved, respected and admired by all who have known him and know him today. In 2009, Council elected him to serve on the Board of Fellows.
Rev Ray Herrmann – ñ̳ 1972 – 1973
- Rev Herrmann was Deputy Master of ñ̳ 1983 to 1985 and President of ñ̳ Council from 2000 to 2005. For many years he has greatly supported the College by conducting Chapel Services, especially as part of major occasions in the life of the College.
- Ray’s ministry has taken him to various locations and he is now retired and lives in Brisbane.
Dr Daryl Holmes OBE – ñ̳ 1983 – 1985
- Dr Daryl Holmes is an Old Collegian having entered the College in 1983.
- Daryl is the founder of 1300SMILES Limited and served as its Managing Director until sold in 2021. Dr Holmes has extensive experience in operating dental practices and an intimate knowledge of the management, administrative and support services required.
- He practiced … dentistry as an RAAF Dental Officer. Upon discharge from the RAAF in 1991 he began private dental practice in Ayr and Home Hill, north Queensland. He has operated dental surgeries in the Burdekin region, Townsville, and Cairns. Dr Holmes accepted a scholarship from the Royal Australian Air Force. In recent years, Dr Holmes has undertaken significant volunteer work in PNG and been recognised with the award of an OBE.
- Daryl was awarded the 2021 UQ Vice Chancellor’s Excellence Alumni Award.
Associate Professor Vaughan Kippers – ñ̳ 1969 – 1971
- Dr Vaughan Kippers was Honorary Senior Lecturer in the School of Biomedical Sciences (Faculty of Medicine) at The University of Queensland, after retiring in 2016.
- Vaughan maintains a teaching role in the Advanced Surgical Anatomy Course offered by the School for Junior Doctors. Until recently, he was Secretary of the Australian & New Zealand Association of Clinical Anatomists.
- He is an Associate Editor of Medical Science Educator, an on-line journal published by the International Association of Medical Science Educators, where he has served as a member of the Board of Directors.
- Vaughan preceded Don Barrett as Secretary of the ñ̳ Council, has been on the Committee of the King’s Old Collegians Association, and serves on the Board of Fellows.
Mr Gary Lynch KSJ
- Gary studied at QUT and while not an Old Collegian both his sons attended the College.
- Gary is a Manager with Qld Government and noted non-executive director of various companies.
- Gary Lynch as one of the Uniting Church’s nominees to Council served on Council from 2012-2022.
- In May 2014 he was elected Vice-President of the College Council. He has been a wonderful Vice-President – always present and willing to step in for the President when they were unavailable.
- He has been true to the Uniting Church and its presence in the life of this College.
The Reverend Canon Emeritus Bruce Maughan OAM– ñ̳ 1955 – 1958
- Rev Maughan OAM graduated in Arts in 1957 and Dip Ed in 1958. He was awarded the SG Brameld Prize for studies in English Literature and took up a teaching appointment at The Southport School in 1959.
- At 54 years of age, he became a fulltime Clergyman in the Anglican Church of Australia.
- Appointed a Knight in the Sovereign Order of St John of Jerusalem Knights Hospitaller and Knight Grand Cross of Justice 1990. Since 1992 he has been the Conventual Chaplain of the Queensland Priory, Residentiary Canon of St John’s Cathedral, a member of the Cathedral Chapter and a Member of the Diocesan Council in the Anglican Diocese of Brisbane.
- In 1955, he entered ñ̳ at St Lucia (its first year in that location), where he edited the College Magazine, ‘The Kingsman”. In 1957 he was elected KCSC Vice President for 1958. He was instrumental in revising the KCSC Constitution in that year. He served as a Member of ñ̳ Council from 1972 until he retired in 2011 and was made a Fellow of the College in 1991. Today, he serves on the Board of Fellows.
Professor Robert (Bob) Menary OAM – ñ̳ 1951 – 1956
- Professor Robert Menary graduated from The University of Queensland and joined the Department of Primary Industries Queensland.
- He was appointed Professor of Horticultural Science, University of Tasmania.
- He was awarded The Order of Australia Medal for his contributions to horticulture. The Robert Menary Tasmania University Scholarship in Agriculture was established to honour his work.
- He retired in 1997 but continues to supervise postgraduate students and to secure research grants.
Associate Professor Janet McDonald
- Associate Professor Janet McDonald was School Captain of Somerville House (1983) and obtained both her BA and MA from Queensland University of Technology (1992, 1994). She received her PhD from Arizona State University in 1999. She is the fourth daughter of long serving ñ̳ Council member (Treasurer) and Fellow, Dr Keith Henry McDonald (PhD) (King’s 1943 – 1944).
- Janet was Head of the School of Creative Arts (2008-2013) at USQ, and was co-recipient of an Australian Learning and Teaching Council Citation for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning (2009).
- She has supported the arts sector in Queensland through service as the Chair of Youth Arts Queensland (2008-2012), previously the State’s peak body for youth arts. She has served on the Flying Arts Alliance Management Committee (2008-2012) as well as the Access Community Services Ltd and BEMAC Brisbane Multicultural Centre (2016-2018). She currently sits on the Friends of Cobb & Co Museum Advisory Group (since 2013).
- Janet is the current President of the Arts Council Toowoomba, and her expertise on regional arts is regularly sought by Arts Queensland to assess a range of competitive arts grants, including the Queensland Arts Showcase Grants, Performing Queensland Fund, and the Regional Arts Fund.
- Her research areas in wellbeing and liminal arts practices in regional areas, feature prominently her co-edited book Creative Communities: Regional Inclusion in the Arts (Intellect, 2015), with Dr Robert Mason, Griffith University. Her investigations into theatre and arts pedagogy have also been internationally published by Palgrave Macmillan: The Palgrave Handbook of Global Arts Education (2017); The Palgrave Handbook of Artistic and Cultural Responses to War since 1914 (2019); and Traversing the Doctorate: Reflections and Strategies from Students, Supervisors and Administrators (2019).
- Janet accepted the position of Fellow of ñ̳ in 2020 and was appointed to the College Council in 2022.
Ms Jennifer McVeigh
- Ms Jennifer McVeigh gained her undergraduate degrees in Arts and Law at UQ in the 1980s and management studies in 2000 at QUT.
- Prior to her retirement in April 2018, Jennifer practiced, wrote and lectured in the field of construction law.
- She was a partner at Clayton Utz from 1996 to 1999. She was a member of the Queensland Building Tribunal from 2000 to 2004.
- From 2005 to 2017 she was as a consultant at Minter Ellison, practising in construction law and actively involved in career and personal development of young lawyers.
- She is the Deputy Chairperson of the Board of Architects Queensland.
- She was a member of the College Council and was Chairperson of the Buildings and Grounds Committee of the College for six years.
Mr John Miles – ñ̳ 1959 – 1962
- Mr John Miles is a highly qualified and experienced Chartered Civil Engineer with a professional background extending over more than 40 years in multi-discipline projects chiefly in the property and transportation sectors.
- He has also had a 47 year association with ñ̳ – where he has been a member of the Board of Fellows and of the College Council and immediate past Chairman of the Buildings and Grounds Committee.
- Between 1978 and 2003, he held board memberships within such bodies as the Brisbane College of Advanced Education (1987-1990), the Australian Council of Building Design Professions (1993-1994) and Queensland Rail (1997-2003).
- John is currently Chairman of the Board of Fellows.
Associate Professor Chris Morrey – ñ̳ 1987 – 1991
- Professor Morrey was initially educated in Melbourne, graduating with First Class Honours in a degree in Science from the University of Melbourne in 1986. He then moved to Queensland in 1987 to study medicine at the University of Queensland, graduating in 1991.
- Since commencing specialist training in Orthopaedic Surgery after obtaining a fellowship from the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in 2000, he has since travelled to undertake further training in 2001 in Bristol, UK, and Lecco, Italy, specialising in pelvic and acetabular trauma and reconstruction, primary and revision joint replacement, spinal surgery, and acute sports injury.
- Professor Morrey is the current president of the Australian Orthopaedic Association Board and Vice Chairperson of the AO Trauma International Board. He is also an examiner for the Royal Australian College of Surgeons for the Orthopaedic Specialists’ final exams.
- He has also served as past Chairperson of the Specialist Orthopaedics Clinical Advisory Group to the Federal Health Department and past Chairperson of the AO Trauma Asia Pacific Board.
- Chris has been a regular visitor to King’s since his departure and three of his four children (all sons) attended King’s between 2007-2016
Dr Gavin Nicholson – ñ̳ 1986 – 1989
- Dr Gavin Nicholson completed a Bachelor of Economics at UQ in 1988 and the LLB in 1995, MBA (Advanced) in 1990 and PhD in 2007 in the field of corporate governance. Gavin is currently Associate Professor in the Business School at QUT.
- In addition to researching, lecturing and developing materials in the areas of governance policy and practice, Gavin is an experienced director, governance researcher and board consultant. He has published extensively and currently oversees several large research projects aimed at understanding how boards operate.
- Gavin is a Fellow of the AICD and Associate Fellow of the AIM and member of the Academy of Management, Strategic Management Society and Australia and NZ Academy of Management. He is currently Chairman of the Cannon Hill Anglican College.
Mr Lawrence Pane – King’s College 1958 – 1961
- Worked for several years with Dr. Grimmett and Dr. Williams to restart the almost dead KOCA and set it on the road to its present eminence.
- Held senior executive and board of directors positions with Government departments and private companies.in Australia and in the United States
- Was for many years President of both the Australian American Chamber of Commerce of Southern California and of the US National Australian American Chamber of Commerce.
- Has failed at retiring three times, including one almost seven year stint sailing around the world with his wife and young son.
Mr Mitchell Petrie – King’s College 1984 – 1987
- Mr Mitchell Petrie recently retired as the Partner-in-charge of Brisbane’s Internal Audit, Risk and Control Services practice at KPMG.
- Mitchell has a Bachelor of Commerce from The University of Queensland and is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, the Institute of Internal Auditors, and as a Registered Company Auditor.
- Mitchell was the Treasurer of the College Council from 2007 to 2013, and contributed significantly to the process of construction and finalising the Centenary Building.
Dr Cliff Pollard OAM – ñ̳ 1964 – 1966
- Dr Clifford Pollard OAM is the Trauma Clinical Lead for Retrieval Services, Metro North Hospital.
- Cliff was a Director of Trauma Services at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and Director of the Qld Trauma Registry at the Centre of National Research in Disability and Rehabilitation Medicine, University of Queensland.
- He obtained a post Fellowship experience in the United Kingdom. For 16 years, Cliff ran a private practice specialising in general, gastrointestinal and laparoscopic surgery, endoscopy and colonoscopy.
- In 2015, he was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for service to medicine in the field of trauma care and contributions to health policy and reform in Queensland.
- Cliff was the Vice-President of the ñ̳ Students’ Club in 1967 and Vice-Master in 1968 and 1969. He was appointed as a Fellow of the College in 2015.
- Over the years he has maintained his links with the College and the KOCA. He introduced Melville Haysom, who presented the memorial mural in 1963. He was appointed as a Fellow of the College in 2015.
Emeritus Professor Colin Power AO – ñ̳ 1957-1959
- Served as Deputy Director-General of UNESCO – the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation. That term as Deputy Director- General came after ten years as Assistant Director-General for Education, a time when, in effect, Colin Power was the “E” in UNESCO.
- For the twelve years he was at UNESCO, Colin Power was responsible for UNESCO’s education programs in the organisation’s 188 member states. He is now credited for having played an outstanding international role in assisting education authorities the world over during a decade of profound political, economic and cultural transformation.
- As Deputy Director-General of UNESCO, Colin Power assumed a very high level of responsibility within the UN system in the global struggle to alleviate poverty, to defend human rights, and to protect world cultural and natural heritage sites.
Dr Brett Robinson – ñ̳ 1987 – 1988
- Brett Robinson attended ñ̳ in 1985-1987 while studying Medicine at UQ. He is currently the CEO of Retire Australia.
- Attended Oxford University where he completeda Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Orthopaedics.
- Rugby player of distinction having captained the ACT Brumbies and capped numerous times as a Wallaby.
- Elected President of the ñ̳ Council in 2015 and retired from that role at the AGM in May 2022.
- During 2019 he led the Council in its deliberations of moving the College from being a men’s College for 107 years to become co-residential in 2020 and in time to tackle COVID as well!! He ably led the Council and Management through the complex process of making significant change to a century old institution. He was the perfect person for the task and he is admired by many people for his skillful and common sense approach to the transition to co-residency. He will long be remembered for his Presidency of College Council – fair, honest, supportive and a leader.
- Brett Robinson is one of only seven people to be awarded the King’s jacket. This was presented to him at the Williams Dinner in August 2022.
Dr Ian Runge – ñ̳ 1970 – 1973
- Dr Ian Runge holds a Master of Engineering degree (Mining) from the University of Queensland and a MA and PhD in Economics from George Mason University (Virginia, USA).
- Ian founded the Runge Ltd group in 1977 after working in the mining industry in central Queensland, Europe, and USA. He is recognized as a leading expert in the field of mining economics and strategy.
- Ian was appointed an Industry Fellow within the School of Economics at The University of Queensland on 1 January 2019; in addition to his appointment as Adjunct Professor in the School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering. In 2018 Ian retired from the board of RPMGlobal Holdings Limited (formerly: Runge Limited) after founding the company 41 years previously and helping to build it into the world’s largest publicly traded mining technology enterprise. Software initially developed by Ian Runge and further developed and supplied by RPMGlobal is fundamental to the planning and scheduling of hundreds of mines.
Professor Tarun Sen Gupta – ñ̳ 1980 – 1984
- Professor Tarun Sen Gupta is head of general practice and rural medicine and director of medical education at the School of Medicine at the James Cook University in Townsville. The mission of the School is to train doctors to meet the health needs of northern Australia with emphasis on rural, remote, indigenous and tropical health.
- Tarun was an important member of the Student Club in all his years in the College and President of the KCSC in 1984.
Mr John Story AO
- Mr John Story AO was appointed Chancellor of The University of Queensland in February 2009 and is a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Queensland.
- He has had an extensive career as a company director, and was chairman of the boards of Suncorp Group Limited, Tabcorp Holdings Limited, Ruralco Holdings Limited and Echo Entertainment Group Limited, and a director of CSR Limited.
- John’s paternal grandfather, John Douglas (‘JD’) Story, was UQ’s first full-time Vice-Chancellor, serving in an honorary capacity, and John has continued the affiliation by studying here and formerly, giving legal advice to UQ.
- He was appointed an Officer (AO) in the General Division in the 2015 Queen’s Honours for distinguished service to business and commerce.
- ñ̳ is pleased to recognise his outstanding academic and professional distinction and service to the community.
Mr Bill Stubbs – ñ̳ 1960 – 1964
- Mr Bill Stubbs practised as a lawyer for 30 years specialising in resource law, company formation and stock exchange listings. He was co-founder of the legal firm Stubbs Barbeler.
- He is currently Chairman of Stradbroke Ferries.
- Bill Stubbs has been a director of a number of exploration companies spanning a period of over 25 years and was Chairman of Bemax Resources NL at the time it discovered and proved the Gingko heavy minerals deposit (now a mine) in the Murray-Darling Basin.
- Bill has been, until retiring, an important member of the College’s Foundation & Fundraising Committee.
Professor David Theile AO – King’s College 1956-1958
- A former Olympic swimmer, Professor David Thielle AO won back to back 100 hundred metres
backstroke Gold medals at the 1956 and 1960 Olympic Games. - He completed his medical studies in 1962 and The University of Queensland pool was later
named in his honour. - Appointed Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons
of England, and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. - Awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy by The University of Queensland and is an
Officer of the Order of Australia. - Dr Theile retired as Clinical Chief Executive Officer at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane in
2012.
Dr Mike Vaughan – ñ̳ 1971 – 1974
- Dr Mike Vaughan is a Graduate of the School of Political Science and International Studies of The University of Queensland and is a former Officer of the Department of Trade, Brisbane.
- Currently, Mike is an Associate Lecturer at The University of Queensland.
- Mike has been a stalwart of the KOCA Inc. In recent years, he was a former Secretary of the KOCA and of the College Council. He was Editor of the Fulcher Orations on behalf of the KOCA and co-edited The Wyvern Tales written in 2004. Most recently, Mike edited Wyvernian Warriors: Kingsmen at War, again on behalf of the KOCA. He was elected at the end of 2009 by Council to serve on the Board of Fellows.
Ms Sally Watson
- Sally has a Diploma of Applied Science (Nursing) Western Australian Institute of Technology, Bachelor of Applied Science (Nursing) Curtain University and a Graduate Diploma of Management Central University of Queensland.
- Her association with ñ̳ goes back two generations with her Great Uncle, Mr Alf McCulloch (King’s 1916) and father Sir Bruce Watson AC (King’s 1946 – 1949).
- Sally’s personal association started with her christening in the ñ̳ Chapel and has continued from there.
- Notably Sally christened the rowing boat the “Lady Watson”, kindly donated to ñ̳ by the Watson family in honour of their late mother Lady June Watson in July 2017.
- The Lady Watson Scholarship was also made possible through a generous gift to the College Foundation in 2019 from Sally, her brother Tim Watson and sister Jenny Brook, in memory of their mother and great supporter of ñ̳, June Watson.
- Sally accepted the position of Fellow of ñ̳ in 2020.
The Hon Penelope Wensley AC
- The now former Governor of Queensland, the Hon Penelope Wensley AC has enjoyed a distinguished career in diplomacy and international relations and the development of Australian foreign policy.
- Ms Wensley was educated at Penrith High School NSW, the Rosa Bassett Grammar School in London, and attended The University of Queensland, graduating in 1967 with a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours.
- In 1994, she was named The University of Queensland’s first woman Alumnus of the Year for her achievements in international relations and was awarded an honorary doctorate.
- Appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) in 2010 for her distinguished service to the development of Australia’s international relations.
Mr Richard (Dick) Wharton – ñ̳ 1959 – 1962
- Mr Dick Wharton has spent his entire career in the service of Australia’s roads. In 1959 he was awarded a Main Roads Engineering Scholarship and, after graduating as a Bachelor of Civil Engineering, went to work with the Qld State Government. He became the Commissioner of Main Roads in 1988.
- Dick was appointed a Fellow of ñ̳ in 2010 and elected to the College Council in 2013.
- He retired from the College Council in May 2022, but remains a member of the Board of Fellows and Buildings and Grounds Committee.
Professor Stephen Wright – ñ̳ 1978 – 1982
- Professor Stephen Wright has a distinguished academic career working in the areas of numerical optimisation.
- He holds the positions of Professor in the Computer Sciences Department and the Industrial and Systems Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, Investigator in the Optimisation Theme in the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery, Past Chair (and current Vice-Chair) of the Mathematical Optimization Society and SIAM Fellow and Member of the Board of Trustees of SIAM.
- During his time at King’s, Stephen, better known as ‘Growler’, served as Minister for Culture in 1980, and led King’s to sporting victory in the ICC Cup in 1981 as President of the KCSC. While a resident at King’s he was also awarded the prestigious University Medal and completed his PhD at The University of Queensland. He was Vice-Master in 1982.
Mr William Yang – ñ̳ 1962 – 1965
- Mr William Yang graduated from the University with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1968.
- He has won international acclaim as a photographer, author and performer. He received an honorary Doctor of Letters for his contribution to photography.
- He worked as a playwright from 1969 to 1974, and since then as a freelance photographer. His first solo exhibition was in 1977. William Yang integrated his skills as a writer and a visual artist in 1989, performing monologues with slide projection. He presented in over twenty individual exhibitions across Asia, Australia, Europe and North America. He is represented by Stills Gallery, Sydney.
Mr Scott Young – ñ̳ 1984 – 1986
- Scott Young was a Kingsman from 1984 – 1986.While at King’s Scott started rugby refereeing and went onto international level.
- Scott was employed by ñ̳ as the Development Manager from July 2007 to May 2010.
- He was a member of the KC College Council 2012 – 2020.
- He was appointed as Chairman of the KC Foundation & Fundraising Committee in May 2013; and then following the review of the Foundation, was appointed as the Chair of the renewed Foundation Advisory Committee in 2018. He has kindly agreed to stay on as Chair of the Foundation Advisory Committee in 2021.
- Scott is an experienced rugby coach and referee and was the leading official appointed to the final of the World Rugby Under 20s World Cup final. Scott is currently the National Referees Manager for Rugby Australia, Brisbane.
- Scott was awarded the 2021 Colleges’ UQ Alumni Award.
